The subject of business dominates the world rankings published by the organizations concerned. This is understandable, as the discipline touches on virtually every aspect of life, from economics to distribution and management.

At the top of the rankings stand Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with University of Oxford coming in third. However, there are some surprises too - for example, Imperial College London ranks tenth in the business category despite having a relatively small number of business-related courses available to its students.

It's no wonder then that business is such an important area for study - it has a significant impact on virtually every aspect of society and economy. Here are just a few examples:

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2017 was released on Wednesday, September 13th. Business topped the ranking for the sixth consecutive year, with an overall ranking of 1st. This is despite a dip in Q1 2017 compared to last year.

The methodology used to determined university rankings has changed little over the past few years, with factors such as research output, industry income and alumni success still being heavily weighted. However, there have been some subtle changes this year that could impact business rankings more than others. Faculty/staff ratio is no longer a criterion in the rankings process but it is worth noting that institutions with lower ratios are more likely to feature world-leading research (hence their high World University Rankings scores).

Asia maintains its position as the region with the most universities in the top 100, while Europe retains its second place despite a slight drop in ranking points. The United States features three universities in the top 10 (Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Columbia), whilst Japan has two representatives (Tokyo University of Science and Technology and Kyoto University).

University of Cambridge remains at the top of the Arts & Humanities category for a fourth year running, while Harvard retains its lead in Physics & Maths. Beijing Language and Culture University has made great progress since joining global university rankings four years ago and now ranks 8th in World Arts & Humanities.

This year's edition of the ranking presents an interesting perspective as it ranks universities in 46 different subject areas including Arts & Humanities, Business & Management, Engineering & Technology, Health, Law, and Science & Technology.

According to this year's Best World University Rankings by Subject publication, some countries with highly-developed education systems continue to perform exceptionally well in many areas despite low scores for economic opportunities. For example (#1) Harvard University tops the Business & Management category with a strong performance across all indicators. Many other countries rank in the top 10 within this sector including Cambridge (#3), Oxford (#5), Stanford (#6) and Pennsylvania (#8).

Harvard also ranks first in Economics & Business/Management (QS ARWU) which is clearly evident from its Performance Index score (+41). This year's edition features Bloomberg Businessweek’s survey of business-school deans which looked at their impressions of the quality of research in business schools around the world. The rankings for this subject are released in two parts, with rankings for faculties in economics/business and management being released earlier this week.

1. Faculty members from economics/business faculties have a higher average publication output than those from management faculties. This suggests that they are more active researchers than those in management studies, which may suggest that their departments are more selective in admitting students.

The EBSCOhost database shows that faculty members from Singapore and China have produced a large number of journal articles over the past five years, indicating their high level of research productivity. This trend is also observed in other disciplines such as physics and engineering where countries like China and Singaporeshine prominently through their performance in terms of citations received by researchers in these fields.
